I hadn't gotten the chance to post it just yet. But if you did not pick up the latest issue of Womag, I did an interview with Josh Lyford on The Crown Diamond. Which was published the night before the performance. Read it by clicking on the link below:

Worcester Magazine's Year in Review Comic Edition
For the last couple of years I've taken part in Worcester Magazine's year in review issue. The last couple of years a few of my artist friends have done parodies of famous comics. I thought I'd give that a try this year and do a tribute of sorts to my favorite strip Bloom County. To check out the artists involved in this year's issue you can click here.

Womag's End of the Year Comic Issue 2011
I got the opportunity to take part in Womag's second annual End of the Year Comic Issue. The brainchild of editor Doreen Manning and organized brilliantly by Andy Fish.
I immediately took the Chicken Ordnance story. The idea of a bunch of chickens posed in a Occupy Worcester type of moment amused me.

Worcester Magazine: The Fuzz Club
Beards! Love 'em or loathe 'em they're still beards. I've always been one of those people who grows them for the Winter and shaves them off in the Spring. I'm also lucky Syd likes me either way.
On a lark I suggested to Worcester Magazine editor Doreen Manning about doing a Beards of Worcester issue. The idea was finding different artists, musicians and so forth from around about the Woo who sported the old face fur.
Wasn't I surprised when she thought the idea was great and I found myself on Monday morning down at Worcester Magazine having my picture taken.
And they thought of a much better title for the issue than I could have imagined.
And the result was an issue that was a lot of fun to be a part of and some really great portraits of artsy folks such as Scott Holloway, Kevin McKeon (dressed in his hot dog costume), Shane Hall and Milo just to name a few.
Newspapers don't always HAVE TO BE posting something depressing. They can be fun too. Besides, this is considered a magazine. So, they're articles can be a bit more diverse and enjoyable than the usual "Welcome Wagon Runs Over Newcomer" type stories.
Much like Womag's End of the Year Comic Issue. More on that later.
The issue hits newsstands around the metropolis today. But if you're not able to pick up a copy, you may also read it online:

Comics in Worcester Magazine

Image borrow from Andy Fish's blog
I won't hide the fact that this is somewhat a life long dream realized. Well, sort of. When I was a kid I wanted to be a comic stripper professionally when I grow up. A phrase coined by Berke Breathed in Bloom County. I loved the comics page and I looked forward to reading the comics every Sunday when I was over my Grandparents. I drew my own comic strips and even had my own long running character.
This was back in the days when comics like Calvin and Hobbes and the Far Side ruled the newspaper. I did for a short time do a series of strips my last couple years of college for the student newspaper. But over time I ended up becoming more interested in comic books rather than comic strips.
However, I did try to submit my college strip to Creators Syndicate. And got flat out rejected.
So, when Andy Fish asked me to contribute to the upcoming issue of Worcester Magazine which will feature comics by some very talented friends of mine I immediately jumped at the chance. Each of them have created comics which capture a certain news story which took place right here in Worcester MA.
The artists include Andy Fish, Veronica Fish, Derek Ring, Adam Fish, Alison Cowell, Mike Briggs, JJB Buckmasker, Christopher Whitehead and myself.
It also features an artist new to me Aloysius Jones. He's someone Andy knows and quite frankly I like his work!! Reminds me a bit of John K. from Ren and Stimpy fame as well as classic Hanna-Barbera cartoons.
I don't think we've seen the last of Mr. Jones.
I also gave a very stumbling interview for a Behind the Cover video of the Comics issue. So, I apologize to everyone in advanced.
The issue is on newsstands now. And did I mention it's FREE!! You can also see smaller versions of the comics online by clicking the link below:

More photo's taken at Strychine opening
More photo's of Saturday's show taken by J Fatima Martins who wrote that really great article with the last photo taken by Scott Holloway.
It should be mentioned J Fatima Martins cannot be blamed for the typo in the title. She didn't do the title she only wrote the article. Which my name WAS spelled right in.

Interview in Worcester Magazine

I did a great interview in Worcester Magazine for J Fatima Martins about a week or so back to coincide with my upcoming show Strychnine and Spaghetti Strand Slipknots: Artwork from the Arsenic Pen of Bret M. Herholz which is taking place at Dark World Gallery starting tomorrow and running till June 30th.
But it was great going down to Ms. Martin's place and conduct a very comfortable and layed-back interview in her condo renovated from an old school house. I had suggested doing the interview there since she wanted me to at some point do an illustration of her in the style of Castle Anthrax from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. So, I thought it would be an opportune time not only to do the interview but to take a couple of pictures of the place as well.
The interview is in the current issue of Worcester Magazine, so if you are out and about the Woo today, be sure to pick up a copy!!

Woo-Town & Me :-)

It was a phrase I've been using for the past few years. When mentioning any events either on my blog here, my blog or Myspace, on Facebook or whenever I'm doing something for either stART on the Street, ARTSWorcester or a class I'm teaching at the Worcester Art Museum, I would refer to Worcester as Woo-Town.
Nobody else was at the time although I did get a few of my friends to start calling it Woo-Town. So, you can correct me if I'm wrong but I believe I am the author of that nickname for the grey slate Metropolis we all know and love as Worcester Massachusetts.
You can look up my blog on Myspace and I believe there are post going a couple years back where I refer to Worcester as Woo-Town. And I don't remember hearing it called that before me. If you wish to refute me on that, please send along your evidence.
But getting to the point, you can imagine my surprise and delight when I was flipping through Worcester Magazine yesterday and I saw a section of it referred to as Woo-Town.
Needless to say if I have started a trend and people are starting to refer to Worcester as Woo-Town, then I am very pleased to be a part of it. Even if I can't make a cent off the phrase, there is something somewhat satisfying about being part of something in a small way.
