The Black Widow Strikes Again (Color Art)

Now available on Bunny and the Badger: THE BLACK WIDOW STRIKES AGAIN!! A color version of an original piece which I did as part of a series of illustrations titled THE BLACK WIDOW MURDERS. The series would inspire me to adapt it into a graphic novel published by Alterna Comics titled DIARY OF THE BLACK WIDOW. The first graphic novel I ever produced.

Which was enjoyed by some. And reviled by Tom Knapp of the Rambles.net.

I'm planning on creating color versions of a couple other illustrations from the series. In a way, these illustrations show a progression of the the characters and scenes which would ultimately appear in the graphic novel.

The image is available in 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20 and printed on high quality cardstock.

Wake Up Worcester

Earlier in the month I had done an interview for Charter Channel 3's program Wake Up Worcester with Hank Stolz. Which I haven't gotten the chance to watch it just yet because I have DirecTV. So, I've been waiting till Hank posts it on Youtube.

I suppose it's not a terrible thing I haven't been able to watch it as of yet. I have a habit of cringing when I hear or watch myself being interviewed.

Nevertheless, this was actually my first time being interviewed for television.

Hank Stolz is a great host. I had enjoyed him during the years when he used to be on the WTAG Morning Show. He has a great enthusiasm. He knows how to keep the conversation rolling during the show and makes the person he's interviewing feel at ease and what they are talking about to be the most important thing in the world.

Which I think is essential when you are a host. And you would be surprised how many talk show hosts on television let their personal agenda's get in the way.

But Hank's show is great and I am looking forward to appearing on it again when my Sherlock Holmes graphic novel comes out. I'll be certain to post the last interview here once it's online.

Halloween at That's Entertainment

I'm planning on doing a book signing at That's Entertainment for Halloween this year. It's going to be on Halloween Day and I should be at the store between 12noonish till probably sometime after 5 or 6pm that night.

AND if you happen to show up dressed up like any one of the characters from my book, I will give you a free sketch and post your costume on my website.

It's Halloween, so I might even get into the act and come to the event dressed up ;-)

One more opportunity to bid!!

Available for bidding one more time!! Diary of the Black Widow and it's sequel The Spaghetti Strand Murder. The winning bidder will receive both books signed personally to them as well as some Black Widow artwork.

Diary of the Black Widow
Written and Illustrated by BRET M. HERHOLZ cover coloring by RORI SHAPIRO lettering by JOHN SHAVER

A young woman with a habit of seducing and killing men attracts the attention of an oblivious Detective and his helper. Will they solve the mystery behind these murders, or will the Black Widow strike again? Combining the illustrative style of Edward Gorey and the humor of Monty Python, Bret M. Herholz crafts a tale of mystery, humor, and suspense.

The Spaghetti Strand Murder
Written and Illustrated by BRET M. HERHOLZ

Lord Algernon Sloughshire has been found dead! The only clue to what caused the murder was a single strand of spaghetti found tied around his lordship's neck. Luckily there's only one person oblivious enough to "solve" this case, none other than the DETECTIVE INSPECTOR!

New Black Widow image

To be perfectly honest, I WASN'T happy with the green Black Widow image. I suppose what I had in mind was to make her look poisonous, so I wanted to choose a poisonous looking color. Unfortunately, she kind of looked like she was a Dr. Seuss character.

And I didn't like how the poison coming from the glass looked either on the original.

So, it was time to go back to the drawing board and revamp the image a little bit. Add some legs this time around and fix it here and there.

I also used the various lasso tools this time to create the poison coming out of her glass. And I chose red over green. I liked the way her red dress looked in the picture with the Detective Inspector, so I went with that color.

The new image is up and running on the the Black Widow Store if you would like to check it out:

New Black Widow t-shirt design

It's based on the pen sketch I did at stART on the Street. I just finished coloring it up and it should be available on a few t-shirts sometime before the end of the night.

I have Andy Fish to thank for the concept. I just always really liked (and appreciated) the pin-up art he did for the Black Widow trade paperback. So, I wanted to do something inspired by the concept.

If you haven't picked up your copy of Diary of the Black Widow, pick it up. There are some really great artwork by some very good friends of mine!!

Always Buy Corroded

It's a parody I did of the old Chesterfield Cigarettes ads with Basil Rathbone I submitted for an upcoming publication using the Detective Inspector. Since he's usually seen with his pipe smoldering, I decided to make it an advertisement for a pipe tobacco. Here's the original ad with Rathbone:
