While rummaging through some artwork to put in the show at Mocha Maya's, I rediscovered some set design I did for a play I wrote (but never staged) back in the dear dead days of the early 2000's.
I ended up putting the two in the second photo in the show at Mocha Maya's. But who knows. I may end up utilizing them some day.

The Final Problem 11x14 Pen and Ink Commission
Just completed my latest commission of THE ADVENTURE OF THE FINAL PROBLEM. Inked in Deleter #4 Black Drawing Ink on Canson 11x14 Bristol Board.
Sherlock Holmes's pose is based on an illustration by an artist who went by the moniker Spy. That image was based on actor William Gillette. Professor Moriarty in my piece was based on Peter Cushing.
Although, Mr. Cushing had portrayed Holmes on both film and television, I always thought he would have made a great Professor Moriarty.

The Final Problem Commission
Pencils on 11x14 Canson Bristol Board. Ink will be applied once I get the thumbs up from the client. Sorry about the quality. I pencil fairly light and it doesn't show up well on my tablet. Most of my details I do directly with ink. I just use pencil for (very loose) plotting out.
Both the Sherlock Holmes Scrapbook and Sherlock Holmes's London have been invaluable resources. I've been using photo's of the recreation of Holmes's sitting room in the Sherlock Holmes Pub as reference material for Baker Street in this illustration.

The Black Widow Strikes Again (Color Art)
Now available on Bunny and the Badger: THE BLACK WIDOW STRIKES AGAIN!! A color version of an original piece which I did as part of a series of illustrations titled THE BLACK WIDOW MURDERS. The series would inspire me to adapt it into a graphic novel published by Alterna Comics titled DIARY OF THE BLACK WIDOW. The first graphic novel I ever produced.
Which was enjoyed by some. And reviled by Tom Knapp of the Rambles.net.
I'm planning on creating color versions of a couple other illustrations from the series. In a way, these illustrations show a progression of the the characters and scenes which would ultimately appear in the graphic novel.
The image is available in 8x10, 11x14 and 16x20 and printed on high quality cardstock.

SPECIAL AUCTION!! Doctor Who: The Time War (11x14 Color Art)
In celebration of the upcoming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special DAY OF THE DOCTOR I am offering a special ONE TIME ONLY print titled THE TIME WAR.
At the end of this years series (or season for those of you in the United States) finale NAME OF THE DOCTOR, veteran actor John Hurt was introduced as a previously unknown incarnation of the Doctor. And there is speculation that he is in fact a regeneration between Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor and Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor. Whether Hurt's Doctor is the actual Ninth Doctor or an interim regeneration much like Michael Jayston's Valeyard from Trial of a Time Lord or Tony Garner's interim Doctor between the Second and Third Doctor from the famed fan film DEVIOUS is unknown.
However, there are a few clues that Hurt's mysterious incarnation maybe the Doctor that indeed ended the Time War by destroying both the Time Lords and the Daleks.
But we will have to wait till November to find out just WHO is this Doctor.
I am going on the theory that John Hurt's incarnation is an interim regeneration of the Doctor. So I placed him in between the Eighth and Ninth Doctor respectively as they would have looked in their television appearances. Although, Paul McGann has gone on to redefine his look in a series of audio adventures. I thought people probably recognize him more in his "Oscar Wilde in Space" look rather than in the leather pea coat (which I think looks sharp on him) which his Doctor has recently been photographed in.
THIS IS A SPECIAL ONE TIME ONLY AUCTION!! What that means is once the winning bid is met a print will be made on 11x14 high quality glossy card stock and SIGNED PERSONALLY to the winning bidder.
Then the digital file which the image was on will be deleted. This will ensure the buyer will be getting a ONE OF A KIND ILLUSTRATION.
Not only will the winning bidder receive the color art, they will also receive the pen and ink original of "The Three Doctor" which this image was based on.
The original artwork measures 9x12 and is illustrated in Deleter Black Drawing Ink. Although I will have to send both images separately, YOU WILL ONLY HAVE TO PAY SHIPPING FOR ONE!!

Special Summer Auction!! Doctor Who: Fall of the Eleventh 16x20 Art Print!!
I thought I would do one more special art auction before the end of Summer. This time I am offering a 16x20 art print in anticipation of Matt Smith's departure from the role of the Doctor in this year's Christmas Episode.
Original artwork by Bret M. Herholz (Diary of the Black Widow/Sherlock Holmes). Originally illustrated in Deleter
Black Drawing Ink on Canson Smooth Bristol Board. Colors added digitally.
Inspired by the cult British Science-Fiction series DOCTOR WHO. In anticipation of Matt Smith's final episode
as the Eleventh Doctor before he regenerates into Peter Capaldi, I decided to do a 16x20 color print based on one of the earliest attempts at illustrating the Eleventh Doctor back in 2010. The image was based on Paul Cornell's concept that the Doctor's past regenerations still exist within the Doctor's mind which he used in the novel TIMEWYRM: REVELATION and the Seventh Doctor audio play SHADOW OF THE SCOURGE.
Although when I first created this image it was to represent David Tennant's Tenth Doctor handing over the
TARDIS keys to his successor. Although, now I saw it fitting as a visual of the Eleventh Doctor joining his predecessors.
The image itself will measure 16x20 and be printed on high quality glossy cardstock. Shipping on this auction,
much like many of the auctions taking place this Summer is free!!
This will be the only time I will be printing this illustration. Once the winning bid is met, a 16x20
print will be made on high quality glossy cardstock and signed and dated to the winning bidder. Then the original image file of the print will be deleted. Making this a one of a kind print. |
And just remember gentle reader, nobody is forcing you to bid on this print. You may do that of your own free will. I am not forcing, demanding, bullying or even physically twisting your arm into purchasing this print.
If you don't like the image simply don't buy it. Which seems like a pretty simple alternative if you ask me.
However, if you do choose to bid on the item, then click on the link above and Happy Bidding :-)

The image itself will measure 16x20 and be printed on high quality glossy cardstock. Shipping on this auction, much like many of the auctions taking place this Summer is free!!

Great review for A STUDY IN SHERLOCK
Roger Johnson of the Sherlock Holmes Society of London and editor of the Sherlock Holmes Journal who had wrote a great review for my previous Sherlock Holmes graphic novel recently wrote a great review for my recent collection of Sherlock Holmes artwork I've done for the past 13 years:
"In 2010 I welcomed a new graphic novel, Sherlock Holmes: The Painful Predicament of Alice Faulkner, written and illustrated by Bret M Herholz after William Gillette’s play. Mr, Herholz’s latest book is A Study inSherlock: 13 Years of Sherlock Holmes Artwork 2000-2013. It’s interesting to see the development of his distinctive Edward Gorey-esque style through scores of mostly unpublished drawings, including a whole sequence for ‘The Cardboard Box’, illustrations for stories by Lyndsay Faye, Bert Coules and Lee Shackleford, and set designs for Gillette’s Sherlock Holmes and Conan Doyle’s little-known play Diamond. What’s in the book may be only a fraction ofthe Holmesian artwork that he’s done. Personally, I’d love to see the rest of it!"
You can check out the The Sherlock Holmes Journal online and pick up a copy of my book at Amazon.com today!!

SPECIAL AUCTION!! Doctor Who: The Seventh Doctor and The Valeyard SIGNED PRINT!!
If you missed out on the last print auction, here's another opportunity to bid on a ONE OF A KIND print!!
You are bidding on a color print featuring the Seventh Doctor and the Valeyard. Although the Seventh Doctor never officially faced his evil future on television, this particular image was inspired by Robert Perry and Mike Tucker's novel MATRIX originally published by BBC Books. This story would have taken place after the television episode SURVIVAL.
I had decided to give the Seventh Doctor a new look inspired heavily by the way Lee Sullivan illustrated him in the BBCi webcast DEATH COMES TO TIME.
Although the stiff collar, spats and question mark on his lapel were my invention. The choice of dark reds for the Valeyard was to have him lurking in the shadows. Which he did for most of Perry and Tucker's novel. If you have not read it, I high recommend you try and find a copy!!
The print itself will measure 11x17 and will be printed on high quality glossy cardstock. What makes both the auction and this particular print unique is once it's sold I WILL NOT BE MAKING another copy of it. There will be only one copy of this print made. Once the winning bid has been made, ONE COPY of the print will be made SIGNED PERSONALLY to the winning bidder and dated.
After that, the original digital file of the image will be deleted. Making this color print ONE OF A KIND in every way!! The winning bidder of this auction will own the only copy of this print.
Suitable for framing and the ideal gift for any fan of Doctor Who, the Seventh Doctor and the Valeyard.

War of the Woo (11x17 color print)
A print I came up with for the upcoming stART on the Street: Spring Canal District Edition which I have to confess was inspired by my buddy Andy Fish's HARVEY BALL'S REVENGE illustration he did (and won a prize for) at the Harvey Ball celebration which took place at the Worcester Historical Museum a few years back.
H.G. Wells's WAR OF THE WORLDS with a decidedly Worcester Massachusetts twist. Featuring a few current and historical hotspots in the fair metropolis known affectionately by some as Wormtown, Wortown, Woo-Town or the Big Woo.
Both places that are still standing and a few that are sadly long gone.
The print measures 11x17 and is printed on a high quality glossy stock. A limited signed and numbered set.
And you will only be able to get it at stART!!
It's also to promote a possible upcoming event that may or may not be happening sometime soon. Exactly what said event is I cannot say. You'll just have to wait and see.
I'm trying to work on a couple more before the day of the show as well as perhaps bringing back a couple old favorites. So stay tuned gentle readers!!

Now Available!! A Study in Sherlock: 13 Years of Sherlock Holmes Artwork 2001-2013
I've spent the last 13 years (on and off) working on art based on Sherlock Holmes. I was about 24 when I started. Yes, it's cliche but it doesn't feel like that long ago. Since then I've done various illustrations. Both independantly and for print.
I thought it was time to collect up as much of it as I could in one volume. Not every single piece in the book is a gem by any stretch of the imagination. However, it does map out my development over the past 13 or so years as an artist.
What you will get is a great number of illustrations, small works and comic art. Both published and unpublished. I've also included my set and costume design which includes a few choice photographs for THE CROWN DIAMOND: AN EVENING WITH SHERLOCK HOLMES staged at Nick's Bar and Restaurant in Worcester Massachusetts.
I plan on having copies available at stART on the Street in June. However, if you can't wait or you won't be able to make stART, you can order your copy by clicking on the link below:
