Lady Julia Grey and Nicholas Brisbane

About a month back I was contacted to do character designs for a novel by Deanna Raybourn titled Silent in the Grave. The novel featured an amateur sleuth named Lady Julia Grey who was bent on investigating the mysterious death of her husband.

I had a great deal of fun working on the designs and I had created the illustration above as a thank you to the clients who contacted me to work on the project.

Brenda and Effie

A commission I did for writer Paul Magrs based on his delightful and wickedly charming Brenda and Effie Mysteries. Which features the stars of the series Brenda (the Bride of Frankenstein) and her friend Effie on the right hand side of the illustration along with some their more villainous characters from the series as well as the not-so-villainous Art Critic Panda from his other fan favorite series Iris Wildthyme who are looking on from the left.

If you have not read Paul's Brenda and Effie Mysteries you are really missing out on a fun series!! I highly recommend you check them out!!

Russellscape

I was invited by mystery author Laurie R. King to create some original artwork for a tryptic called Russellscape. A celebration of 15 years since her first book in the Sherlock Holmes/Mary Russell series The Beekeepers Apprentice came out.

I had decided to do the point which Holmes and Russell first run into each other in Sussex. The scene is when Holmes mistakes the 15 year old Mary Russell for a young boy and she pulls off her cap to reveal her long blonde tresses.

If you would like to check out the other artists in Russellscape, click on the image below and scroll down to the bottom of Laurie's website:

Unveiling the Spaghetti Strand Murder

Here's the cover for my upcoming graphic novel The Spaghetti Strand Murder. I am VERY happy with the work Peter Simeti did with the cover. One of the images I had requested for the look of the cover was to have images of the different characters on a strip of film. And it came out exactly the way I wanted it to!! I was also very pleased with the font for the title. It really fits the feel of the story.

I will let you know when it hits the stands!! Up after that, The Adventures of Polly and Handgraves: A Sinister Aura!!

The current project

For the past couple months (probably since sometime in November) I've been working feverishly on a 50 page graphic novel. Well, it started out as a 45 page graphic novel but you know how these things work.

Nevertheless, here's a sneak peak at page one of the next project:

For those of you who are familiar with my previous project Diary of the Black Widow, this project is somewhat a departure from the more sketch comedy feel of the Black Widow. I'm planning it to be a more straightforward murder mystery with a couple of characters I really like.

Also, on board to be doing the grayscale for the pages is Rori Shapiro. My vision is to make the pages somewhat resemble the grays Sidney Paget used in his Sherlock Holmes art.

I'm hoping to have an ashcan ready for the upcoming Boston Comic Con in March. If not, I'll probably get some promotional cards together in time for the show.

If you would like to check out my past projects Diary of the Black Widow and Confessions of a Peculiar Boy... and Other Stories, log onto Alterna Comic's website at:
