SPECIAL AUCTION!! Doctor Who: The Time War (11x14 Color Art)

In celebration of the upcoming Doctor Who 50th Anniversary Special DAY OF THE DOCTOR I am offering a special ONE TIME ONLY print titled THE TIME WAR.

At the end of this years series (or season for those of you in the United States) finale NAME OF THE DOCTOR, veteran actor John Hurt was introduced as a previously unknown incarnation of the Doctor. And there is speculation that he is in fact a regeneration between Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor and Christopher Eccleston's Ninth Doctor. Whether Hurt's Doctor is the actual Ninth Doctor or an interim regeneration much like Michael Jayston's Valeyard from Trial of a Time Lord or Tony Garner's interim Doctor between the Second and Third Doctor from the famed fan film DEVIOUS is unknown.

However, there are a few clues that Hurt's mysterious incarnation maybe the Doctor that indeed ended the Time War by destroying both the Time Lords and the Daleks.

But we will have to wait till November to find out just WHO is this Doctor.

I am going on the theory that John Hurt's incarnation is an interim regeneration of the Doctor. So I placed him in between the Eighth and Ninth Doctor respectively as they would have looked in their television appearances. Although, Paul McGann has gone on to redefine his look in a series of audio adventures. I thought people probably recognize him more in his "Oscar Wilde in Space" look rather than in the leather pea coat (which I think looks sharp on him) which his Doctor has recently been photographed in.

THIS IS A SPECIAL ONE TIME ONLY AUCTION!! What that means is once the winning bid is met a print will be made on 11x14 high quality glossy card stock and SIGNED PERSONALLY to the winning bidder.

Then the digital file which the image was on will be deleted. This will ensure the buyer will be getting a ONE OF A KIND ILLUSTRATION.

Not only will the winning bidder receive the color art, they will also receive the pen and ink original of "The Three Doctor" which this image was based on.

The original artwork measures 9x12 and is illustrated in Deleter Black Drawing Ink. Although I will have to send both images separately, YOU WILL ONLY HAVE TO PAY SHIPPING FOR ONE!!

Peter Capaldi: The Twelfth Doctor

Now that it has been announced that Peter Capaldi will indeed take over the role of the Doctor in Doctor Who, now we have to wait several more months to find out just how his Doc will dress.

I thought I'd have a bit of fun and do my own little concept art of how I would design a costume for his Doctor.

The inspiration for my illustration comes from two different sources. One was a comment made by someone on Facebook that if you were to put a mustache on Peter Capaldi he would look remarkably like Peter Cushing's Dr. Who from the Dalek films. The other source is Capaldi's costume as Professor Marcus from a recent stage adaptation of the film THE LADY KILLERS.

So, I took elements from both those sources and put them together. The cravat, pince nez and fingerless gloves were inspired by Peter Cushing's Dr. Who while the grey button-up long-sleeve cardigan, long black coat and long grey scarf are inspired by Capaldi's Professor Marcus attire.

The walking stick, spats and classic series Sonic Screwdriver my own little additions to the look.

You may also bid on my concept art right now by clicking on the link below:

SPECIAL AUCTION!! Doctor Who: The Seventh Doctor and The Valeyard SIGNED PRINT!!

If you missed out on the last print auction, here's another opportunity to bid on a ONE OF A KIND print!!
You are bidding on a color print featuring the Seventh Doctor and the Valeyard. Although the Seventh Doctor never officially faced his evil future on television, this particular image was inspired by Robert Perry and Mike Tucker's novel MATRIX originally published by BBC Books. This story would have taken place after the television episode SURVIVAL.

I had decided to give the Seventh Doctor a new look inspired heavily by the way Lee Sullivan illustrated him in the BBCi webcast DEATH COMES TO TIME.

Although the stiff collar, spats and question mark on his lapel were my invention. The choice of dark reds for the Valeyard was to have him lurking in the shadows. Which he did for most of Perry and Tucker's novel. If you have not read it, I high recommend you try and find a copy!!

The print itself will measure 11x17 and will be printed on high quality glossy cardstock. What makes both the auction and this particular print unique is once it's sold I WILL NOT BE MAKING another copy of it. There will be only one copy of this print made. Once the winning bid has been made, ONE COPY of the print will be made SIGNED PERSONALLY to the winning bidder and dated.

After that, the original digital file of the image will be deleted. Making this color print ONE OF A KIND in every way!! The winning bidder of this auction will own the only copy of this print.
Suitable for framing and the ideal gift for any fan of Doctor Who, the Seventh Doctor and the Valeyard.

Coming Soon: The Ninnies

The cover art I did for a book I illustrated for Doctor Who/Brenda and Effie author Paul Magrs's book The Ninnies.

Paul is an author whose work I have greatly enjoyed over the years. I first got into his writing with the Doctor Who series of original novels.

It bears mentioning that the strongest point of the Virgin and BBC Books that came out based on the show during those lean years when the series was yet to return was the fact that the writers were really good.

Many books based on television series are usually very weak by comparison to the original series. But not the Doctor Who series. And Paul Magrs's work I enjoyed in particular.

So, it's been great over the last few years to be able to artwork based on both his Doctor Who and non-Doctor Who work.

My wife absolutely loved the book and I had a great time illustrating it. To give you a general feel of the book, it's half Roald Dahl, another half Phantom Tollboth, yet another half John Bellairs and 100% fun!!

The book is getting ready to go to the printers so I will let you all know when it hits the shelves.

New print!! The Blue Carbuncle

I try to do at least one new print for every art show. This year I created a color print of an earlier illustration I did based on Sidney Paget's illustration for the Sherlock Holmes story The Adventure of the Blue Carbuncle.

Five signed copies the print will be available for purchase at this year's stART at the Station on Sunday December 6th. So, get them while they last!!

Doctor Who

I had started doing some artwork again for E-Bay. This time I thought I would try some Doctor Who art.

It's funny what will sell and what won't sell on E-Bay from month to month. A couple months ago people were bidding on my Sherlock Holmes work right to left. But now I haven't even got a sniff. But I put my first Doctor Who illustration up for bidding and the same day someone has put a bid on it.

Oh well. I'll probably hang onto the Sherlock Holmes ones till the Robert Downey Jr. movie comes out. People will probably take interest in the character by then. Especially if the movie is a success.

For those of you who know me or read my blog, I have been a huge fan of Doctor Who since the early 1980's when I use to watch episodes from behind the sofa because Tom Baker frightened me. Especially the end of The Invasion of Time when he looked right at the camera and started to laugh. I still remember that one and when Julian Glover's character pulled off his human masked and revealed that he was a one-eyed alien at the end of part one of The City of Death.

Of course fear usually turns to intrigue and by the time I was in the Fifth Grade (and they started showing episodes of the Fifth and then Sixth Doctor) I was hooked. Every night at 7pm on PBS Channel 2 in Boston.

But here are the illustrations I created for E-Bay. All of which are selling:

On the horizon for publication

Of course, I'm not looking forward to the Summer being over. I love the Summer and I love the warm weather. It's what makes living in New England worth it.

BUT I have a couple of books to look forward to sometime in the fall. Both The Spaghetti Strand Murder and The Adventures of Polly and Handgraves: A Sinister Aura should available for purchase. Hopefully, just in time for stART on the Street or the Boston Comic Con!!

These are two books I'm looking forward to seeing in print. Both I've worked (and reworked) very hard on. Polly and Handgraves especially which Rori did a marvelous job doing the grayscale.

She has a very busy schedule right now with finishing up a childrens book, a Sherlock Holmes novel and a follow up album to her fantastic Head Games.

So, I am very grateful that she was able to make time and work on my project as well.

I will let you all know when both books are being released once I get a definite release date.

Sepa Black Widow

I've been getting a bit more adventurous with Photoshop of late. My last two dabblings in sepia made me want to give the Black Widow the same treatment. I'm considering sometime down the road reworking the cover to Diary of the Black Widow. This is the image I may go with for the cover. Although, I am considering changing the color seeing that it would be a bit too similar to Polly and Handgraves.

Alice (from the Palace) and the Cheshire Cat take two

I did another attempt at Alice and the Cheshire Cat this morning before work. The inspiration was taken directly from John Tenniel's orginal Alice in Wonderland artwork.

Finished!!

I just finished lettering my upcoming graphic novel yesterday!! I'll be sending the pages out to Alterna Comics on Monday. But I'm very pleased to have this project in the can and hopefully everything looks great!!

The book itself is a well kept secret only known to a very few. So, you'll have to wait and see!! But I will have an announcement about it on this site, my home page, my Facebook site, my Deviant Art site and my Myspace page sometime soon.

WHEW!! It's tough work being a whore!!

My second attempt at the Bat-Man

My second attempt at a "sons of a silent age" style the Bat-Man. I actually based the pose off a still from one of the 1940's Batman movie serials:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/joshnunn/527031383/

The costume looks so delightfully absurd and shoddily done. That's why I like it.

The illustration/sketch didn't turn out as well as I would have liked but I'm going to keep experimenting with the concept.

Making a switch from Windsor Newton to Deleter

Probably for the past ten years or so I've been using Windsor Newton india ink for all my illustrations and comic art. Before that, I had used Pelikan. Unfortunately, most of the art supply stores in my area stopped carrying Pelikan so I started using Windsor Newton.

I've always enjoyed using Windsor Newton ink. It doesn't gray out over time the way Higgins does. And it's very rich and dark. Unlike Higgins.

But an art chum of mine Andy Fish has been telling me about this ink he uses called Deleter. He has told me that he thinks it's the best ink out there and it inks darker than even Windsor Newton.

I've seen a great deal of Andy's work with the Deleter ink and it looks really great!! So, I figured I would give it a go and get myself a bottle of it.

I still need to get through a few remaining bottles of Windsor Newton I own before I can break into the Deleter. But once I do, I'll let you know what I think of it.

The Bat-Man

Batman is one of my favorite costumed heroes. He was the only reason I would watch the Super-Friends.

I had been toying around with doing an illustration of the Bat-Man for a while now. Ever since I started doing pen and ink work exclusively in 2000. The inspiration started again when I was looking at Andy Fish's Batman art for the upcoming Bat-Man 1939. Which is going to be off the hook!!

I suppose I was going for a Sons of the Silent Age style Bat-Man. I suppose if Douglas Fairbanks was going to star in a Bat-Man film, this is the way it would look in my mind. But a great deal of the influence came from the stiff wings of the first Batman story as well as the two Tim Burton films.

But I was also greatly influenced by the costume from the Batman serials of the 1940's. Yeah, they're awful. But I like them. And I like the whole idea of Batman looking like just a man in a costume.

Most Batman fans know that his costume is pretty much bulletproof and flame retardant and everything else. But I liked the concept of Bat-Man appearing human and having to rely on his own wits to get him out of a situation.

I also wanted to give the impression of the costume being made out of some sort of army canvas. I had gotten the chance to wear my Grandfather's army jacket a while back and I thought about how heavy the material made it feel. So, I kept that in mind when I was creating his wings and even his costume.

I also wanted to make the costume less of a form fitting leotard and more of a uniform. Hence the army canvas look.

Despite having no super powers, Batman has proven over the years NOTHING can kill him. None of his villains have succeeded in killing him.

And even Joel Schumacher two crappy Batman movies couldn't kill him!!
